On 24 July 2026, Cry of the Xcluded Western Cape was invited to address a community workshop held in Atlantis. The workshop attracted more than 30 community residents who engaged in an open discussion about the socio-economic challenges facing the area.

The discussions focused on critical issues affecting the community, including poor service delivery, unemployment, inadequate housing, local government failures, poverty, crime, gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), substance abuse, and a growing sense of hopelessness among residents. Community members shared personal experiences of the daily hardships they face and expressed deep frustration with the continuing neglect of Atlantis by all levels of government.

A particular concern raised was the high rates of youth unemployment. Residents noted that many young people have obtained qualifications but remain unemployed due to the lack of economic opportunities. The geographical location of Atlantis, situated far from the Cape Town city centre, was identified as a significant barrier, making access to job opportunities, universities, hospitals, and other essential public services both difficult and costly.

The workshop concluded with a resolution for the community to strengthen its organisation and mobilise residents around a common programme of action. Participants agreed to initiate a People’s Housing Process to advocate for the community’s housing needs while intensifying campaigns for improved service delivery by the City of Cape Town, as well as by the provincial and national governments.

Additionally, the meeting agreed that Atlantis should collaborate with other struggling communities across the province under the banner of Cry of the Xcluded Western Cape. Participants recognised that building unity among communities is essential for advancing a collective struggle for decent housing, jobs, quality public services, and social justice. The workshop ended with a commitment to broaden community mobilisation and strengthen the Cry of the Xcluded campaign throughout the Western Cape.
