SAFTU/AMCU/AoU: “We Demand a Say in Budget 2020”

Issued by The Cry of the Xcluded

The Cry of the Xcluded –  a campaign launched by  SAFTU, AMCU & the Assembly of the Unemployed – will be converging on Cape Town ahead of the National Budget Day to protest the Government’s continued economic policies that benefit a few and deliver spending cuts and deepening  the misery of the vast majority – the people’s whose views count for nothing. The unemployed and those working for starvation wages. The people who are imprisoned in concentration camps of decay, euphemistically called townships, where sewage is allowed to run in the streets, where taps run dry, and where fear seeps from every crevice. In short, the Xcluded.

Hundreds of people are travelling from from across South Africa will to make our voices heard:

  • Real Job Summit: Opening 9am Monday 24 February outside Parliament then continuing at St George’s Cathedral.
  • #WorkForUs Budget Day March: Departing 9am on Wednesday 26 February from Keizersgracht Street to the Cape Town Civic Centre  at 10am and then onto Parliament by midday.

As the Cry of the Xcluded we are saying that there are alternatives. The Real Jobs Summit will provide an opportunity for activists from social movements, civil society and scholar activists to develop a programme of action to address SA’s jobs emergency and to highlight real and concrete job creation and livelihood strategies that exist.

At the  #WorkForUs Budget Day March we will reject the austerity budgeting and demand government spending and taxation that drives redistribution and delivers jobs, services, and dignity.

Budget Day 2020 should not be another attack on the poor, it is time to rise up and deliver alternatives.

The Cry of the Xcluded invites you to join us at St George’s Cathedral on the 24th & 25th of February 2020, in the lead up to Budget Day. The Real Jobs Summit will open outside parliament on the 24th with a speak-out before returning to St. Georges Cathedral for a series of commissions on Land, Economic Policy, the Climate Crisis, Housing and Social Security.

Each commission will need to address the following, The nature of the problem, solutions to the problems and strategies for change. The Cry of the Xcluded is committed to building a South Africa that #WorksForUs.
